What You Should Know About Navicular Syndrome

By Minnie Whitley

There are some horses that find it difficult to walk. Sometimes this syndrome would happen to them between ages four to nine years old. You could refer to it as Navicular Syndrome. There are those who call it a disease because different parts of their foot can be affected when they have this one. It is usually seen in the front feet. One may have seen it in the rear feet but that is really a rare case.

There are some breeds that are much affected by this compared to other ones. There are some breeds that react to this problem differently. For others they might feel that it is crippling but there are some who will just ignore this.

There are a number of theories which explain what might be causing this to start. They have first thought of this as some kind of arthritis which one would get from so much pounding. They have conducted studies so horse owners will have an understanding on this. But, what they know for sure is that there are some traits you could use to determine soon if they will be suffering with it.

It indicates that those having the history on their lineage who suffered from this will be prone to have this too. They would be able to inherit it from parents and from grandparents too. If they will have traits like those then it is sure they will experience such case too.

It has been proven that if the techniques of trimming and shoeing them is incorrect then that would be contributing to experiencing this syndrome quicker than normal rates. When the horses are doing some tasks that are strenuous then they will have it quicker particularly if they got those traits. It will happen to those working on incorrect ground conditions for so long in which the surface is really hard. There are times that the diet could be another factor.

Their front foot which is affected will be changing its appearance as time passes by. It will also become severe. The foot would be contracted to the heels and would shrink in size. It will be boxy in shape as time passes by. It will also be smaller compared to the one which were not affected.

The ones that have history in their lineage will be suffering it. This is proven to be true because it is being passed on one generation to the next one. If your horse has a small foot which supports his body mass then that has high risk for acquiring it. As its owner, you need to be conditioning it before they will be performing their job.

The best treatment is to use a shoe that will support and protect the heel area. This will aid in reducing the pain that they are feeling. The toe of their shoe has to be shaped in a way to ease movement. This should be done until the angle and position of their foot will be back in shape.

If you would be giving proper care and proper treatment then their usefulness will last for many years. Aside from this, they will be in good condition. One can make it possible by providing the horses with more exercise and a more balanced diet.
