By Brenda Nelson

The term Ob Gyn stands for obstetrician and gynecologist. At times, the term is spelled as Ob/Gyn. By definition, obgyns are health specialists who deal with the health issues that affect pregnancy and the female reproductive system. They work to make sure that women have healthy reproductive systems and general health. They achieve their goal by engaging in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of all diseases, conditions, and disorders affecting female reproductive systems and pregnancy. To find a good ob gyn Belize is a recommendable place to pay a visit.

It takes a lot to become an obgyn. The educational requirements are not just many, but lengthy too. One must start by attaining a bachelor degree, followed by a medical degree and then completing a residency program. All these steps take four years each. Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and other scientific courses are given emphasis in undergraduate coursework. People are admitted into medical school based on how they perform in undergraduate degree.

Students are required to apply for medical school for them to be considered for admission. A lot of factors are considered for one to be selected into medical school because there are usually very many applicants each year, making the admission competitive. Medical school lasts four years, with specialization begging at the third year while the first two years are more about basics of the profession. Students cover courses in pharmacology, genetics, pathology, microbiology, and human anatomy during the first and second years of medical school.

The last two years involve a lot of hands-on practice in hospitals and other medical settings under the supervision of qualified physicians. Students also rotate among various disciplines such as gynecology, internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics. After successfully completing medical school, one moves into residency where they gain more extensive training into labor and pregnancy management, female reproductive system, and health issues that are only unique to women.

Licensing is mandatory in this profession. All practitioners are needed to be licensed in all the US territories and states. And the American Board of Medical Specialists (ABMS) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) are the two bodies responsible for licensure of obgyns. Practitioners get licensed by these bodies depending on the medical school they studied at. Medical schools in this field are classified into two classes, that is, either osteopathic or an allopathic school.

The job of an obgyn requires them to work with women to diagnose, prevent, and treat medical conditions which are specific to women. Cervical cancer, menopause, and breast cancer are examples of such conditions. They also provide care for women while pregnant and even after they deliver.

Other responsibilities obgyns are charged with are offering counseling to patients, gathering and documenting medical histories, and doing yearly examinations. The job requires workers to communicate with patients to learn about their symptoms and other aspects, which makes it important to be good at communication. Success in this career is also dependent on having good interpersonal abilities and empathy.

Throughout the years to 2022, it is expected that the services of obgyns will be on high demand. Jobs will steadily rice throughout this time bracket. As of the year 2014, 256, 635 US Dollars was the median salary for an ob gyn.
