By Joyce Williams

There are several tools that learning institutions can employ to better educational trainer overall performance. Instructional rounds are good examples of such tools. They involve the observation of a teacher by other group of teachers in order to compare their performance. Discussions made at the end of the observation period aid in self-assessment, and thus, promoting overall performance.

The team of teachers contains around five teachers, who are either volunteers or are selected randomly. The team is headed by a teacher, who is responsible of conducting the whole exercise. After the team is informed of what is expected from them, a suitable date is appointed on which the exercise will take place. All the observations during one of the learning sessions made are recorded for later discussions.

To ensure the exercise is effective, it is always advisable that the number of teachers in the group should not exceed five. Early preparation is done for the students. They are usually informed of the events that would be taking place so that they may maintain a normal routine; hence, ensuring that the correct observations are made.

Once the exercise is done, the teachers analyze and discuss on the observations made. They are all given equal opportunities to present what they observed during the tools. They closely evaluate all the observations all the while noting both the positive and negative details. The lead teacher just as in the making of the rounds is also in charge of the discussion.

These rounds have proven to be effective since they have aided in the improvement of a lot of issues in schools. Apart from teachers gaining a lot of information from the exercise, they have become more equipped with all the essential materials to improve their teaching techniques; thus, enhancing the quality of education provided.

In addition to bettering the teacher overall skills, the tools also promote good interactions among teachers. They get the opportunity to engage with each other and learn a lot from the experiences of one another. They are able to pick a lesson or two about how they can improve their teaching methodology. This also promotes friendly working environments, since they are all comfortable with each other and can accept corrections.

These tools also aid in tackling a lot of classroom issues. They help the teachers discover problems they did not think existed. This way they tackle a lot of underlying issues. Through the discussions they are able to arrive at amicable agreements on how to run things in order to better the quality of education offered to the students.

Learning institutions should really consider employing this exercise. Teachers should actually volunteer for such exercise, this is because the exercise itself involves evaluation that is quite friendly. It helps one gauge their performance and work on areas where they might be challenged in. Therefore, they should not shy away, rather they ought to embrace it since there a lot of benefits to be enjoyed.
