Progress On Bladder Cancer Research

By Miranda Sweeney

The bladder, hollow in shape is an organ located in a body specifically in the lower abdomen. Its usage is to store urine. Urine itself is a waste product which comes about after the kidney filters blood. Bladder cancer is known to start from the bladder inside and will grow later to the walls of the bladder. This particular disease has cause the death of many people which has brought about the importance of bladder cancer research.

Up to now, very big steps in research have being made by the many institutions which carry out research on this tumor. This among other institutions includes medical centers and also a lot of universities interested in this research. One of the recent issues which are still ongoing is creation of an understanding on various genetic changes that are found in bladder cancer. Researchers are also interested in knowing some differences between those cells that cause it and those that do not.

Again, they want to understand the impact of such differences that make these cells to grow bigger and eventually spreading to other body parts. This research has established changes in the DNA of cells which possibly may help in prediction of the outlook of patients with the tumor can affect treatment.

P. E. T. This is position emission tomography scan. Research says that this scan can identify any spread of cancer better than any other scan such as MRL. It is even able to create pictures inside the body on organs and tissues. Normally it is done by injection of a radioactive sugar substance inside the body of a patient. Cells which use more energy will take up this sugar. Cancer, being more active absorbs this radioactive substance. The scan will in turn discover the substance and come up with images which show the inner parts of a body.

Urine tests are being carried out to investigate the tumor. These tests are aimed at establishing the presence of any substance that can be of help in showing a person with such a tumor. These tests are helpful in trying to diagnose this tumor. Also this is aimed at looking for cases in which patients are getting this tumor even after being treated for the first time.

Further research is conducted to help reduce incidences of occurring back to a patient for a second time after treatment. The main risk of someone who has had this ailment would be development of different type of it within the bladder or other parts within urinary tract.

Researchers are also in an attempt to identify whether this particular risk can be in any form can be reduced through use of a drug, certain food or even dietary supplements. There is also an attempt to find a vaccine that can reduce the chances of it occurring again.

Lastly, there is target therapy. It focuses on genes, proteins and also tissue environment aiding the growth ant survival of cancer. This target to block spread of an already infected tumor cell and the damage they can cause to other cells
