Neuropsychologists attend to brain malfunctioning that is disruption to normal activity. They attempt to ameliorate cognitive impairment and the subsequent abnormal behavior that results. It is a unique and rewarding field.

A practitioner in this field is called a neuropsychologist. Their expertise more specifically deals with the treatment of brain injuries and illnesses. Some start practicing after this. However, many patients prefer practitioners with a PhD. Because of this, many continue studying for a doctorate degree for another 4 years.

Experience in the field follows this intense study program. Upon completion of all the necessary requirements, one may also elect to become a member of a professional organization to make contacts and find mentors. Much valuable information can be cleaned from these sources. Then one decides to go into private practice or work for an institution such as a hospital or mental facility.

Many neuropsychologists prefer to conduct research exclusively, or it may be an adjunct to a clinical career. It is expected that they will explore all avenues before ending up in a chosen place of work. They may continue to study whatever the choice may be in order to keep up with the latest information including the overall field of clinical psychology.

Brain functioning is critical to normal behavior and deviations can be debilitating to the personality and demeanor of the patient. It can destroy well-being, confidence, and a sense of happiness. Diagnosis requires significant observation and testing. They may rely on other colleagues for a second opinion. They conduct tech scans, for example, to localize any brain damage that may be provoking illness or odd behavior.

The doctor's professional assessment will dictate subsequent treatment for brain-derived illness. Surgery, medication, and therapy may be prescribed. There are commonly accepted programs and they can be adapted or customized depending on the individual case.

A median salary of those with 11 to 15 years of experience is 130,000 USD. Those with more than 25 years of exerience can earn as much as 185,000 USD.
