Emotional Abuse Counseling And How It Can Be Helpful

By Shirley Stevens

Emotional abuse can have lasting and devastating results when one does not deal with it. It can be a problem for a child who grows up in a home where the parent is constantly abusive. There are marriages which are also abusive. Yet, one does not always focus on this topic. However, there are psychologists who deal with emotional abuse counseling.

There are other forms of abuse which one perceives as more serious. However, it is the words that can leave a lasting impression in your mind. They cause one to grow up as a child with a poor self image, a low self esteem, with little confidence to speak of. Parents may tell their children that they are not worthy, and they will believe this as true.

This is common in a marriage as well. Things may go well in the initial stages. Once the honeymoon period is over, things begin to change. A spouse can reveal that they have a personality disorder, for example. They may start to abuse the wife or husband, in some cases because they are stressed or have a drinking or drug problem.

A therapist will help someone build up their self esteem and confidence. This is very often lacking in a situation like this. The victim would have been put down over and over, and they need to encourage so that they feel worthy. This can take some time, especially for those clients who have been abused over a long period of time.

It can start slowly when it can even seem as a joke. You may be called names by your spouse or partner. This can get worse until you start to feel threatened and fearful. You may feel as if you are trapped. They will usually have a lot of control over you, and it is difficult to get out of the situation. This can play on your mind day and night.

Sometimes this is caused by certain things, and the person who is causing the abuse may be willing to go to therapy. This can be the cause of a drinking problem. They can get angry and take it out on the family. This is something that they may not remember in the morning. It can also relate to the person who has a personality disorder which they have to deal with.

There are also a variety of methods which counselors in Seattle, WA use, depending on who they are dealing with. For example, some clients may benefit from group therapy which can be very helpful in the way they are able to express themselves. It makes them feel as if they are not alone in the world and that there are others dealing with the same issue.

This also relates to bullying with children. This has become more common these days. Children often don't want to talk about certain incidents at school because of how their parents may react. These incidents are often what many children will remember in years to come, and they need the support of a loving person to help them through the tough times and to offer the right sort of guidance.
