No, the real reason to stop smoking, is because anybody who smokes has fallen victim to the biggest and most powerful trap that man and nature ever conspired together to create. The nicotine trap. We are brainwashed from an early age into believing that cigarettes are precious and give immense pleasure, and that this is where the addiction comes from. A dying man in a movie is always given a cigarette, the last request of a doomed man is for a cigarette. Our conscious minds might not notice the message, but our subconscious takes it in.

Furthermore, we are always reminded how difficult quitting is, how reliant our body is on cigarettes. The thought that our body can be reliant on anything but water, food and sleep, is a strange thought to me. This is how confusing the message has got.

In truth, if you are smoking, you are just putting a poison into your body, a very addictive one at that, and the pleasure DOES NOT COME until you extinguish that cigarette, forcing the nicotine to rapidly leave your body and your brain to begin to crave nicotine, which in turn makes you light up another one, and there is the pleasure, the relief at ending the cravings.

You didn't enjoy your first cigarette did you? The more you smoked, the more pleasurable smoking seemed to be, why was that?

Simply because the more established the circle of craving became, the more you thought you enjoyed smoking, but you were in fact just ending cravings.

So why quit smoking? Because there is nothing to quit. Why put something that is terrible into your body, once you have realised it is doing nothing? why pay through your nose to poison yourself when there are no advantages at all? Does it make sense?

The question is not WHY quit smoking, but WHY KEEP SMOKING?

As for the HOW to quit smoking, that is simple to. Just stop smoking. Read Allen Carr's book for more information if you do not believe what I am saying here, because everything I have learned came from him, and I failed to quit so many times until I read his book.

Brian suffered with GI issues for several years before a friend suggested that he might be lactose intolerant. This made sense to him as eating an ice cream with a waffle cone, sandwiches with cheese, yogurt with granola and many other milk based desserts or meals set off his GI issues. As I discussed in previous article 'Simple Steps Toward a Healthy Life' you come to understand what free radical is and how it is created. But when your body produces more free radicals than it can handle, it creates an 'oxidative stress'. What is the first thing that comes to mind when we hear the word 'oxidation', you are right- it is the same process that causes a cut apple to turn brown. This is mostly the cause, for majority of the chronic diseases.

What are chronic diseases?

It must have the following aspects:

  • multiple risk factors,
  • long latency periods,
  • a prolonged course of illness, and
  • functional impairment or disability
Most chronic diseases have no cure and some can be immediately life threatening e.g. heart disease. Some can persist over time and can be intensive in terms of management, e.g. diabetes. Most are going to be affecting a human throughout the life time so the quality of life is robbed from them.

Typical treatment will involve the use of antibiotics to control the infection and prevent complicating factors from developing. Aspirin or other analgesics medications may be used to reduce fever or discomfort. Cool magnesium sulfate compresses may help ease inflammation. Rest is usually required to recover.

Hospitalization may be required for those with compromised immune systems due to cancer or HIV or for cases that include a very high fever, elevated blood pressure or continual nausea and vomiting. An infection near the eyes may also require a hospital stay.

Symptoms of Parkinson's disease can vary in intensity from one person to the next. You may experience a very mild tremor while someone else may develop symptoms that interfere with his or her ability to walk, talk or complete normal everyday tasks.

Chronic Kidney Failure Stages - Stages 1 to 5 Explained

Chronic kidney failure stages are ranked from stage 1 to stage 5. If you have chronic kidney failure, your kidneys are slowly losing their ability to remove wastes and excess water from your blood. The condition is progressive meaning it gets worse over time. However, you can live with the condition for years before symptoms are seen.

The condition is also referred to as chronic kidney disease or chronic renal failure and affects approximately 2 out of 1,000 people in the United States. It is typically the result of other diseases and disorders that damage the kidneys. Diabetes and high blood pressure are two conditions that can lead to this chronic kidney disease.

There is no cure for the disease, however, if diagnosed in one of the early stages, medications and diet and lifestyle changes can help slow the progression of the disease.

Chronic Kidney Failure Stages
The National Kidney Foundation set 5 chronic kidney failure stages to determine the severity of the disease. The chronic kidney failure stages are based on the GFR level (glomerular filtration rate), which is a measurement of how quickly your kidneys are able to clean your blood. If your kidneys are healthy and functioning normally, your GFR level will be 90 mL/min or greater.

Stages

Normal = Healthy Kidneys with a GFR level of 90 mL/min or greater
Stage 1 = Kidney damage but normal or high GFR of 90 mL/min or greater
Stage 2 = Mildly decreased GFR of 60 to 89 mL/min
Stage 3 = Moderately decreased GFR of 30 to 59 mL/min
Stage 4 = Severely decreased GFR of 15 to 29 mL/min
Stage 5 = Kidney failure or dialysis. GFR of Less than 15 mL/min

In stages 1 and 2, there may be no noticeable symptoms. In these chronic kidney failure stages, the disease is usually diagnosed through lab tests that detect associated conditions such as high blood pressure, higher than normal levels of creatinine or urea in the blood, blood or protein in the urine, or evidence of kidney damage (i.e. MRI, CT scan, Ultrasound, contrast X-ray).

In stage 3, you may develop anemia and/or signs of an early bone disorder.

In stage 4, your kidneys are losing the ability to properly remove waste products and excess water from your body and you will need to prepare for dialysis treatments or a kidney transplant.

Stage 5 is also called end stage kidney disease, or end stage renal disease (ESRD). In this stage there is a complete or near complete loss of kidney function. Your body accumulates wastes, water, and toxic substances because the kidneys are unable to clear them from the body. In this stage you will likely need dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive.

Chronic Kidney Failure Stages and Prognosis

Chronic kidney disease is progressive and there is no known cure for the disease. Most cases will progress to later stages and require dialysis or a transplant.

If you undergo dialysis, you have an overall five year survival rate of 32 percent. If you receive a kidney transplant, you have a two year survival rate of approximately 90 percent depending on your donor.

Diet and Heart Disease

Approximately thirty-five years ago public health authorities in the United States decided that people should limit fat in their diet, primarily saturated fat. The main concern was as that saturated fats raise blood cholesterol and increases the risk of heart disease. The McGovern committee's report, "Dietary Goals for The United States" was published in 1977. Although possibly not based on solid scientific data, the committee's main results were confirmed a few years later by the USDA. The main conclusion was that Americans should "avoid too much fat, saturated fat and cholesterol".
Soon, the demonization of fat, primarily saturated fat, spread around the globe. Public health authorities in Scandinavia and the rest of Europe based their recommendation on the same arguments as the USDA. Although possibly a misinterpretation or oversimplification of the available evidence, in a few years time this led to something we could call the "low-fat mania".
Food manufacturers started providing us with low-fat varieties of almost every food alternative we know. But, fat is difficult to replace, because it is an essential component of good and tasty food. Instead of fat, different types of refined simple sugars, such as the famous high fructose corn syrup were used to make people like the low-fat varieties.
As the years went by it became apparent that obesity was on the rise. People were getting fatter and fatter, despite all the low-fat food. Furthermore, type 2 diabetes seemed to be skyrocketing. Was it because we were not following the public health guidelines or was it because of the guidelines themselves? Is it possible that public authorities were wrong? Is it sensible to make general recommendations on diet and nutrition that applies for everybody? Should the obese, sedentary, middle-aged male follow the same diet recommendation as the thirty years younger normal weight, well-trained university student?
Death rate from coronary heart disease has declined in the United States and Europe for the last 25-30 years. This is due to many different factors. Medical and surgical therapy has improved, smoking has become less frequent, cholesterol levels are lower and treatment of high blood pressure has improved. We do not know whether dietary recommendations have been helpful in this respect. However, many specialists believe that the increased frequency of obesity and type 2 diabetes may soon reverse the declining death rate from heart disease,

Recent research and experience has shows that one of the most effective way for an obese or overweight person to lose weight was to cut down on carbohydrates and increase fat consumption. This concept was but forward by Dr. Robert Atkins in his book, The Atkins Diet Revolution, published 1972. Although severely criticized by the scientific and medical community at that time, the low carbohydrate, high fat concepts have survived the test of time. The low carbohydrate supporters blame the "low-fat mania", induced by public health recommendations for the current obesity epidemic, that they say is all down to over consumption of sugars and carbohydrates.

For many years, a huge discussion has evolved around the concept that a calorie is a calorie. If you eat more than you burn, you will gain weight, if you burn more than you eat you will lose weight. If this is true, the cause of obesity is quite simply that people eat too much and exercise to little. The cure for obesity would also be very simple; eat less and exercise more.

However, there is a lot of evidence indicating that it is not all about calories. Some recent studies have indicated that weight loss seems to be greater on a low-carbohydrate diet than on a conventional low-fat diet that has the same number of calories. However, this is not true for all studies. Different macronutrients may possibly have different effects depending on individual factors, such as stature, body weight, age, metabolism, insulin resistance and level of physical exercise.

Recent scientific evidence indicates that public health authorities may have to reconsider their recommendations on the consumption of macronutrients such as fat and carbohydrates. The fear of fats may have been overemphasized and there is evidence that over consumption of sugar and simple refined carbohydrates may be an important causative factor in the current obesity epidemic.
