Creating Stimulating Activities For Alzheimer Patients

By Phyllis Schroeder

Alzheimers Disease is a serious condition. Millions of people are diagnosed with the condition each year. Although they are diagnosed with the illness seniors want to keep their mind sharp until their condition declines further. There are stimulating activities for Alzheimer patients that they can do to keep their mind active and thought engaged.

Health professionals understand that when a patient is nearing the final stages of life, it is imperative for the patient, as well as family members to receive support. These family individuals want to know what will happen as their loved one moves toward the later stages with Alzheimers. However, there are things that can be done to keep the persons mind stimulated before the end nears.

Play word games. You can actually make up your own word game to play with the adult. A suggestion would be to create a game that would connect words with family members. Since people with the disease slowly lose their memory, you want to keep them remembering familiar faces for as long as you can.

Listen to old music records. Most people have their own collection of music which they like to listen to. Pull out the records if that is what brings back the best memories and have them recorded to CDs. The senior can then listen to them on the latest music hardware. Most seniors enjoy singing along and trying to remember the words to music that they listened to years ago.

Bring out the photo albums and reminisce with the individual. You might find that the senior take great pride and enjoyment in seeing younger photos of themselves. It might bring back joyous memories of the yesteryears. Be careful not to include photos that might bring up not so happy times, such as the recent loss of a loved one. But, you do want them to remember the good times that they shared with the person.

After the disease has reached it final stage, it is then when the end of life team will step in to work with the patient, and family members. End of life care is for any patient for nearing the end of their terminal health condition. However, this can be prolonged for some with a bit of stimulation for the brain.

Arts & Crafts is also a wonderful way for these elderly people to express themselves. Drawing pictures encourages the mind to remember and respond to those memories. There is no need to worry about the senior having artist skills just give them a paint brush and let them be free. They will get so much pleasure from doing something that they think is masterpiece. You will think so to when you watch how hard they work at something which they believe you will love and enjoy.

There are many stages that a person goes through who has been diagnosed with the condition. However, loved ones can do things to keep the seniors mind stimulated and active until their final days. Lasting memories can be made with elderly individual until their final days.
