Positive Traits Of Quality Cavachon Breeders

By Sandra Lewis

Cavachons are a highly desired designer dog that is neither very common or easy to find as breeding them is not an easy task. They must either be a mix of a purebred Bichon Frise with a full blooded Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, or two perfectly mixed first generation offspring from unrelated litters. As these pups generally come at a premium price, it is important to only use high quality Cavachon breeders who exhibit certain key traits.

The AKC does not officially recognize this breed as it is actually a hybrid, so there is no officially recommended list of reliable providers. The best recommendations generally tend to come from other people who choose to own Cavachons. Regardless, there are certain factors that can make a breeder of higher quality than others.

One thing to take into consideration is that it can be quite difficult to tell a breeder's quality by a website. The best option would be to pay a personal visit to the facility. This provides an opportunity to see the conditions in which the dogs are housed, how they are socialized, fed, exercised, and bred, first hand and to ask any questions face to face.

First begin by verifying that litters are not mass produced and that only one breed is bred at the location. These are common signs of puppy farming which is detrimental to the health and welfare of the dogs. In such circumstances, females tend to be mated too young, too often, and too long.

A physical visit allows one to assess the cleanliness of a facility. They should check that the dogs are adequately socialized, happy, healthy, well groomed, have proper and clean bedding, and that there is no waste or feces present. The animals need to be provided with plenty opportunities and space to run, play, and exercise, and not be kept in kennels or confined to a single room.

One should also inquire as to what type of health guarantee the breeder will provide on all the pups they sell. While the breed itself is prone to certain conditions as they age, the warranty needs to cover situations such as genetic defects that were not immediately detected. It is recommended that one inquire whether or not the puppies will be verified by a vet, given their vaccinations, and be de-wormed before they are released for pick up, as this is generally included in their cost.

A breeder who is truly dedicated to their craft is going to be equally concerned about who will be adopting their puppies. They will make sure to go over breed expectations, behavioral characteristics, grooming and attention needs, spaying and neutering, as well as socialization and obedience training. They want to know what type of living conditions the prospective owners have and whether or not there are other pets or small children in the home, as these could be concerns for these dogs.

It will greatly benefit a prospective owner to demand copies of each parent dog's lineage papers as verification of their pure bloodlines. They should also take the initiative to learn all they can about the breed beforehand to feel confident that the animal's characteristics will be compatible with the way the person lives. It is most important that anyone thinking of buying a puppy feel comfortable asking any and all questions that they might have.
