Antihistamine is a drug which controls the physiological effects of histamine (an organic nitrogen compound instrumental in regulating immune responses and acting as a neurotransmitter). The use antihistamine for allergies is quite widespread. It counters the inflammatory response often triggered by excess histamine content in the body.

However, some rich natural sources of antihistamine for allergies are also favored in addition to the chemically synthesized chemically. Some of these popular plants and herbs are:

a. Coltsfoot - This plant is also known as butterbur. Its roots, leaves and flowers are helpful in alleviating congestion from hay fever and other respiratory disorders. Coltsfoot is equally effective as any allopathic antihistamine drug. It enjoys a one-up status of not producing side-effects such as drowsiness. However, it should be used under doctor's consultation as its toxic in higher doses.

Also considered a brilliant remedy for curing bronchitis and cough. Thyme is also said to possess properties similar to oxytocin's.

d. Chamomile - Also called German Chamomile, this herb gets its antihistamine property from the compound, quercetin. Also chamomile is widely used as an ingredient of herbal tea due to its antioxidant and antimicrobial characteristics. As it has an anti-platelet property, precautions must be taken when someone's consuming blood thinners.

e. Fennel - Just like chamomile, fennel also contains the strong natural antihistamine, quercetin along with some phyto-estrogens. Fennel is useful in treating allergies, histamine-associated inflammation, indigestion, mucus from the lungs and spasms of the gastro-intestinal tract as well.

f. Reishi - It's full of antiviral and anticancer properties. Reishi acts as antihistamine and treats allergies very well. The presence of the compound, lanostane makes reishi a powerful source of antimicrobial characteristics.

g. Goldenseal - Belonging to the continent of North America. Its twisted underground root is utilized for medicinal purposes. With strong anti-inflammatory properties, it serves best to counter the effects of histamine. It can be used to cure a whole range of ailments such as eczema, heart burn, periodontal problems, painful menstruation and infections. Experts advise to take goldenseal for short time duration, say around 3 weeks as it can accumulate in the body tissues as a toxic component.
