What Is Involved In Hernia Repair Surgery

By Brian Barnes

Hernia will mostly be experienced whenever there is breaking of internal tissues or organs through holes in the body. There are surgical procedures used for the treatment. The procedures most used are hernioplasty and herniorrhaphy. In consideration of hernia repair surgery, there are a number of things that one should know.

Small hernias never cause any symptoms. Generally, the surgeries are classified as either hernioplasty or herniorrhaphy. The surgeries are performed during the day and thus will get home on the same day. They are fairly safe and effective. In most cases, it will take between 1 and 2 years before hernias start to cause painful, noticeable symptoms. There are people who might notice symptoms only when they take part in strenuous exercise.

There are some symptoms which will indicate that surgery is required. They include long-term pain and discomfort, or when the hernias become large. You will need to consider a surgical operation when the discomfort or pain starts to interfere with your daily activities. The same applies to people whose hernias are in places where they could get worse or enlarge, for instance the groins. In some instances, the condition will not end up causing enough symptoms to warrant medical intervention. However, it cannot resolve or heal without surgical procedures.

The first type of surgical procedure is herniorrhaphy which is the oldest type of surgical procedure. With this procedure, the surgeon will make a long incision which is directly above the hernia. He will then use surgical tools to open the resulting cut such that it can be accessed. Tissues and organs which might have been displaced will then be returned to the original location. The hernia sac then gets removed. The sides of muscle from which the hernia protruded will then be stitched back.

The second procedure is hernioplasty and is commonly known as mesh repair. With this procedure, instead of stitching muscles openings to close them, they are covered using flat, sterile mesh. That mesh is made from plastic that is flexible. There are small cuts made around the home, followed by having the patch stitched.

Before one gets discharged from the hospital, the doctor will provide a list of activities that they need not take part in, and for what period of time. In most cases, recovery will take a maximum of 6 weeks. One is allowed to resume normal activities after one or two weeks.

Just like is the case with surgical procedures, there are some possible side effects. To begin with, you might find that the area with the incision remains painful and noticeably red. The pain will be experienced when it is touched. For you to minimize inflation, over the counter medications will be prescribed. There are some not so common side effects like tissue damage, infections of the urinary tract and other general infections.

There are some signs that if experienced should be reported to the doctor. For instance, if the incision remains painful for many days after the procedure, you will need to see a doctor. The same applies to when there are new symptoms which were not present immediately after the operation.
