By Arthur Collins

One may become anxious or depressed at anytime. This can happen when you are facing a certain amount of trauma in your life, such as when a loved one dies, or you may simply be stressed at work. A lot of people think that they need some time out, and simply ignore the issue. The problem with this is that they may be ignoring the underlying issue as well, and this is where things get out of hand. This is where you turn to drugs and alcohol as a form of comfort. It obviously does not do you any good and the problem will simply escalate.

Depression and anxiety also go hand in hand. When you are feeling down in the dumps, it can also lead to anxiety. You may find that you are constantly worrying about these symptoms. I may become severe in that you may not want to venture outside the home. This will lead to more severe forms of anxiety.

Fortunately, there are treatment options available. This comes in the form of therapy, medication or natural treatment. There is also self help which has been successful, but it is often better to turn to someone who really knows more about the disorder. They will be more qualified in this.

Other people battle with social anxiety which is also very frustrating. This is where you are not comfortable going out, thinking that you are being watched. You may have a hard time socializing in company. A lot of people also develop these types of symptoms and even battle to eat or drink in public.

One has to look at the underlying issue because often this is what caused the disorder in the first place. Sometimes people have been through a great deal of trauma in their lives. They may have come from a home where they have been abused. They may have had parents who were alcoholics. This can cause one to become depressed later on in life.

Medication is something that many people are prescribed. However, it is not for everyone because of the side effects. You need to go to an experienced psychiatrist who knows what he or she is doing. A therapist may refer you to him or her. This can be helpful, but you need to talk about your problems at the same time.

Therapists will use different methods and techniques, depending on certain factors. They may like to set goals, and this can help a lot of patients because they may like to know how far they have come in the process and this will help them feel encouraged and motivated as they move along. However, other patients are more casual. In saying this, it is important to get something out of every session that you attend. You have to realize that this is not just a simple chat with a friend. You should be moving forward in your process.
