By Karina Frost

September is National Preparedness Month. For this reason, many organizations are creating awareness about emergencies that are likely to take place. Information on what to do during such times is given. Disaster preparedness kits are a collection of supplies needed in case of an emergency. They are necessary to avoid being stranded in case of a crisis.

What is packed in a kit should depend on the type of disasters common in an area. These kits should have both basic and special needs. Basic needs are such as food and water. Food should be non-perishable and easy to make. Special needs should be included if you are dealing with kids or disabled people.

Items should be packed well inside the kits ensuring they are not tedious to carry. Careful labeling should be done to prevent confusion. Getting to them must be an easy task because; in case of a disaster one has to move fast. Items packed ought to be constantly checked especially those with expiration dates. If something expires replacement must be done early enough.

Children though young, can be useful in the planning process. They can do easy, but important things. They can plan survival kits for pets if a family has one. Moreover, they could add to the items that their parents had left out of their plan. An example of what they could add is games for them to play. If given certain responsibilities they can do them to perfection. This can be advantageous to them later on.

If individuals do not prepare for a crisis they may end up stranded. An important step for preparation is knowing what you could face. A place could be prone to earthquakes so one should know safety measures in case of such an occurrence. Every place should make safety plans such as school and work places.

In case of an evacuation, a family should have discussed a place where they plan to regroup. They should also have knowledge of evacuation routes and shelter locations. It is advisable to practice evacuation at least twice a year. You should have in mind where you would go and the route you would use. Alternative routes to your destination ought to be considered.

You can try and acquire extra skills that could be of help. One can learn first aid and also fire extinguishing techniques. When planning for your pet you should find out about pet-friendly shelters. This is because some places have policies that do not allow pets. Your evacuation route should have such a place.

Some things such as disasters cannot be foreseen. Therefore all we can do is try and be safe and also survive. That is where owning a survival kit comes in. You ought to know how to use it so that it can be beneficial. The survival kit ought to be checked often. This helps ensure everything is in order and well assembled.
