The Physics Of Military Antenna Mast

By Tammie Caldwell

Military operations are very critical and those in the base need to know the whereabouts of the other men in the field. Hence, communication systems are very helpful in such critical situations, especially in asking for backups when the situation gets out of hand. When it comes to military communication systems, radio and antenna devices are the most reliable. There are light antennas but they do not guarantee high frequency signals. Most of the time, size and weight are the primary issues with military antennas.

Some of the most reliable systems in military operations are RF and Satellite Communications. The use of military antenna mast is crucial for both. But there are things to consider in manufacturing these innovations, like the bandwidth, size, and materials. The cost of manufacture and labor are also included. Hence, it is never easy to modify or improve antennas.

But there is a never ending issue regarding the size of these masts. Designers and manufacturers find it really difficult to shrink the properties of these devices because of the fact that higher frequencies have bigger and longer radio waves. Hence, the bigger the antenna is, the more efficient it will be in capturing signals under low frequency environments.

However, experts have outlined their concerns regarding the mast sizes. They have indicated that the bigger and taller the device is, the higher is its tendency to capture frequencies no matter how low the signals are. Such equipment are even a few inches to a few feet taller than the actual size of an adult man.

While users prefer the least heavy and the smallest sizes, designers are still incapable of giving them that. According to experts, the usual physics of creating such innovations has always been higher, heavier, bigger, which yield better receptions. Otherwise, there will be low frequencies which is impossible to communicate effectively between men at the base and men on the field.

It is easy to suggest that mobile phones be used. It may sound and look really easy to do but there are also loopholes in this. It is true that mobile phones are handier and that they are very efficient. But the question lies in its efficiency on any area and condition.

The conditions in war stricken areas are often very negative. Network signals which are land based are sometimes limited and often, they have been destroyed by war. Thus, there is a need for phones to have a more extensive system like radio frequencies.

Hence, only RF communications systems are suitable in these areas, the experts reiterate. But applications engineers are already finding ways to shrink down the size of these antennas although it is nearly impossible to do so. Studies and experiments are still ongoing while the demand for smaller devices for battle increase dramatically.

Also, satellite communications are very efficient. These can be used in information dissemination quicker and more efficiently. These are the ones being used by armies to report the locations of enemies using communication codes.
