How You Can Prevent Navicular Disease Effectively

By Enid Hinton

There is a reason why there are doctors and medications for pets. This is because they can be susceptible to diseases as well if you do not take care of them well. If they are already emotionally attached to you like they are family, you would feel discomfort also. The same effect happens even when the animal is just considered an asset to business.

Horses are unlikely pets but almost everyone would want to have them. If you want to have a good breed, you better be prepared to pay the right amount because they can really come at a high price. And if this is the kind of investment that you want to make, you need to make sure that they are protected from any type of disease including the navicular disease.

This is a condition that happens on the joints of the foot of your animal. And when this happens, it would be impossible for the horse to perform the stunts that they do when they are still well. This is also what leads for them to be cripple or lame.

It is important that you get to know what are the possible reasons of the occurrence of the this condition. Knowing the basics would be very useful for the prevention of the disease and prolonging the health of your pet. Aside from this, you will also enjoy more moments with them at the healthier state.

The main reason for the surfacing of this condition is when the feet is constantly subjected to pressure and compressions. There are also many situations that lead to this. But the more this happens, the more the ligaments thins. These are the ones protecting the joints or the bones from rubbing against each other. When it is gone, it will cause pain every time the feet is moved.

If you purchase a horse for ranch purposes, you have to see to it that they be given the right amount of work load. If you try to make them work more without letting them rest, pressure and compression happens. You can also notice that show horses are not allowed to practice all day.

The shoe is what protects the feet of your animal. But if it is not the right fit, navicular syndrome happens. This also applies to not properly trimming the hooves prior to putting on the shoe. In this aspect, if you are not sure about the method, you should always let the professionals do this instead of doing this on your own and endangering the health of your pet.

One reason for the constant pressure on the heel is the body weight of the animal. When the body is too big or too heavy for the legs, this is what happens. This is also another thing that you have to be careful about when you are taking care of your pet. The simple solution for this is exercise and just the right amount of it.

If you are to prevent this from happening, you have to see to it that the vet would have a general check up every once in a while. The recommended frequency would be at least twice a year. This way, it would be easier to detect if there is something wrong. And you can immediately correct or do things in order to prevent it from worsening.
