Intuition, scientific knowledge, and academic capacity are the major aspects of an individual measured by the Dental Admission Test. Other considerations include grade of averages, letters of recommendation, and performance in interviews.

Typically, it takes four years to complete training in a dental school, although that period is variable. After training, either a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree or Doctor of Dental Surgery degree is awarded. During the first 2 years of study, coursework emphasizes laboratory and classroom studies in health and dental sciences. Sciences studied include periodontics, radiology, orthodontics, dental anesthesia, oral pathology, and pharmacology.

More emphasis is given to clinical practice during the final two years. Students are allowed to diagnose and treat various oral conditions in patients in a clinical environment. However, all activities carried out by students are directed and supervised by a more qualified practitioner. Licensure marks the final step of training in general dentistry. Most people decide to enter the job market at that stage after being licensed.
