Information On Sickle Cell Anemia Prevention

By Imelda Reid

Sickle-cell anemia is a disorder characterized by the assumption of a rigid sickle shape by the red blood cells. This disease is hereditary and therefore there are no sickle cell anemia prevention methods that have been developed yet. People with this disease do not however have to die young because there are many precautions that can be taken to manage the illness.

Because of the nature of this disease, the patients usually have a high risk of oxygen loss and dehydration. They are therefore required to take a lot of fluids in their diet. The people with this disease are also supposed to have adequate rest as their bodies do not have the capacity to handle too much fatigue. Regular examinations are also very important to detect if they have any complications that may lead to their death.

Intense exercises should always be avoided by people who suffer from this illness. Physical activity increases the demand of oxygen in the body. This is due to the less capacity of oxygen carried in their blood. If they need to start a workout program, they must first consult the opinion of a doctor to see if it will be possible.

Smoking is strictly forbidden, whether it is passively or actively. There are critical chest conditions that can be triggered because of the polluted air they take in. High altitude has low oxygen levels hence it must be avoided. If taking a trip on air is necessary, then they ought to select an airline that offers portable oxygen.

The main thing that causes mortality is the infections that come as a result of this disease. The sick people must therefore prevent the infections in every way they can. This can be done through vaccination against common illnesses like influenza, TB and hepatitis. Apart from the vaccines, preventive antibiotics are also very important.

People with this illness must make sure that they always eat a balanced diet. Food supplements can also be used to complement to foods they take. Iron is an important component of their diet therefore must always be available in the diet. Over consumption of iron is however dangerous because they can cause an iron overload which is not good for the body.

This disease is known to create societal and emotional misery to the sick people and also their relatives. The children who have this illness normally get secluded from the other children at school and also most of them have poor grades brought about by the repeated times they fail to attend classes to visit their doctors. Adults are not exempt because they also experience their own piece of problems.

In spite of the way the families feel when they see their loved ones going through so much pain, they are supposed to stay strong so that they show support to the victims. The victims should be treated as normally as possible so that they do not feel like they are a dying course. With all the above precautions observed, it will be possible to have longer lives for the sickle-cell victims.
