How To Defeat The Silent Killer, Sleep Apnea

By Roland Ting

Are you perplexed how you can spend a full night asleep in bed and then wind up not rested enough? If other possibilities have already been investigated, you might indeed be afflicted with sleep apnea. If you think that's the case, don't worry, just read this article.

Speak with your doctor about treating your sleep apnea with a dental mouth piece. You might possess an airway that is naturally narrow, or you might have a recessed chin or small jaw. All of these can make the symptoms of sleep apnea seem more pronounced. You will get better rest if you use specialty devices to position yourself and align your jaw properly while sleeping.

Are you a drinker or a smoker? Quit these terrible habits. Using these vices can harm your airways. Alcohol can relax airways while smoking can cause them to swell, both of which can cause you to have sleep apnea. If you do not want to quit, just do not do it before laying down to sleep.

Do you regularly smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol? Stop these bad habits. The reason is because these harmful substances impact your airways, and as a result, your sleep. Smoking causes swelling in the airway. On the other hand, alcohol causes the airway to relax, much like sleeping pills. If you are unable to walk away from these habits forever, at least avoid them prior to sleeping.

When you travel, be sure to bring your CPAP on the trip. Once you have a CPAP machine, neglecting to use it for even one night can cause problems. This machine should have a travel bag with it. This will help ease transporting your CPAP machine if you must be away.

Your physician may suggest that you start recording your sleeping habits in order to zero in on your sleep apnea symptoms. This log is where you'll keep track of how much you sleep during the night, and other symptoms you may experience. The person you sleep next to can alert you to your snoring, if you stop breathing or you move your limbs suddenly. This makes it easier for the doctor to diagnose your condition.

If nothing you are trying is improving your sleep apnea symptoms, you should talk to your doctor about some of the more drastic treatment options that are available. If less invasive treatments do not work, it is sometimes necessary to perform surgical procedures such as adenoid and tonsil removal and/or airway enlargement.

Do you feel better prepared to deal with sleep apnea? Now you know how to begin your battle with sleep apnea and finally get a good night's sleep. Keep in mind that it is a process; you will not see all the results right away. Don't stop trying and things will get better.
